VNSA BOOK SALE 2026 JOB DESCRIPTIONS
Adder/Baggers Teams: You will work as a team of two at a specific station. These are not pre-assigned a table or a partner. Please pair up and work at an open space (or relieve a table at shift change). See the Pit Boss if not sure what station is available.
The Adder is seated and calculates totals. Repeat what the bagger calls as you input to ensure accuracy. Write total number of bags/boxes on calculator tape. Reminder: On Sunday, read total amount and say, “divided by 2 equals (amount).”
The Bagger stands across the table from the Adder and raises the NEXT sign so the Line Director can send the next customer. Bagger calls out the price of the books adding small amounts in your head. Call ‘total’ at end and state how many bags or boxes you loaded.
Do NOT place unbagged books into shopping carts.
Cart Dispenser (Inside)
Carts are taken quickly when the doors first open. Distribute numbers to those who want carts. When a cart becomes available, advance the lighted number sign to correspond with the next number. Do not allow those without numbers to ‘cut in’ before those who have been waiting with numbers. Remind shoppers that we have holding areas at both ends for books if they don’t have access to a cart and wish to continue shopping.
Cart Worker (Outside)
You are responsible for all carts that leave the building. Give the customer a claim ticket when they bring a cart to you. Ask the customer to drive their vehicle to you and help them load the books. MAKE SURE YOU MATCH CLAIM TICKET TO BOOKS BEFORE LOADING THE CAR. Return empty carts ASAP to the building. Do not allow carts to go into the parking lot.
Cashier (To Serve in this Role, must be a VNSA Member or VNSA Patron)
Cashiers handle both cash and credit cards and may also accept in-state checks. All cashiers must attend credit card training, which will take place Wednesday just prior to Salad luncheon. You will be contacted by email and can receive one on one training. Cash drawers must be picked up from the treasurer before the doors open or before the start of your shift. YOU are personally responsible for your cash drawer. Never leave it unattended. Treasury security will walk you to your station if at Sets/R&U or Large Purchase. After the transactions are complete, customers should be directed to the door guard at the nearest exit.
Crossing Guards: Due to the layout of the check-out lines, crossing guards will have large stop signs to facilitate the flow of traffic between customers in check out and shoppers.
Door Guards (Seated Job): Door guards are in place to keep eyes on the customer and prevent people from walking out the garage doors without paying.
Main (Exit/Entry):
Main Exit door guards check the customer’s receipt to ensure payment has been made (3 Door Guards)
Main Entry Guard will use a clicker to keep track of how many customers are let into the building (1 Door Guard).
East Building south wall: SE garage door – West/Sports
NE wall (near R&U)
West Building south wall (3 stations):
SW garage door – Cookbooks
SW garage door - Business
Exit to Wesley Bolin (2 door guards)
Wesley Bolin (Large Purchase) Exit Door (2 door guards)
Large Purchase Workers
Work in the Wesley Bolin Building with customers who make large purchases. Customers may return to the Agriculture Center with an empty cart to continue shopping while purchases are being totaled. Customers agree to purchase all books left in the Large Purchase Area. Workers add the purchases, pack the books, and help load the boxes into the purchaser’s vehicle. Direct customer to Large Purchase cashier for payment. Large Purchase Workers include adder/bagger teams, cashiers, and customer service assistance to vehicle.
Line Directors
Line Directors are in charge of the Adder/Bagger areas at the checkout area. They keep customer lines flowing smoothly through the checkout area. Line Directors are responsible for directing shoppers to the correct checkout line.
Pit Boss: The Pit Boss oversees the Line Directors, Cashiers, and Adder/Bagger teams and resolves any problems in the checkout area. They will have a pricer and determine the cost if price tags are missing.
Refreshment Center: Assist in setting up and cleaning up for meals served during set-up weekend and the Sale. Your hours may be different from other shifts in order to have things ready at mealtimes.
Re-Sort Runners
Re-Sort Runners pick up books from the red Re-Sort boxes at the ends of the tables in the Agriculture Center and the carts in Wesley Bolin. Bring them to Re-Sort at the west end of the Agriculture Center. Re-Sort runners return books to categories, but do not put them on the tables. Look for the ‘Put Resort Here’ signs and inform a category volunteer that they have delivered a box. Re-Sort Runners must be strong, able-bodied volunteers who are able to lift book-filled boxes.
Re-sort Sorters
Sort books into the proper categories. Sorters must be experienced at general sorting. They must be able to stand for long periods and work quickly. This is an extremely important job; if a book is in the Re-Sort area it can’t be sold.
Z Category Worker:
YOU are our best salesperson. Keep the tables full and eye-appealing, talk with the customers, answer questions, and help customers search for their treasures.
